I am sure this is the same unit that Sony uses - HVL-LBP - according to the product brochure there is a 1200 series and 1800 series both with 10 lamps - the light output for the 1200 series seems to be the same as the Sony (1100 lux at 3 meteres) but the Comer 1800 seems to put out 1800 lux at 3 meteres - is this the case - that is, is it stronger than the Sony HVL-LBP - if that is the case I am interested in buying it from you
Thank you for your interest in the LED lights. I have talked to Comer about the specifications. They do manufacture 1200 and 1800 series. The 1200 series is equivalent to the light output from the Sony model.
According to the spec, CM1800 produces 1800 lux at 1 meter distance (not 3 meters).
Thanks for the YouTube demo - I'm sure it will pay off for you. Would you please send me your quotation for:
2 CM-LBPS1800s 2 NP-F970 Sony Compatible Rechargeable Battery. 1 Dual-charger
Once I have your invoice, a $USD check will arrive in about a week. Once it clears, please ship to Vancouver, BC.
Can you send me your quotation for the above on Monday morning? (I'm also in Pacific time zone). Thanks, Kevin
Hi Kevin, thank you for your interest of our products. An separate email has been sent to you.
"Michael - I just got my Comer 1800 from Taky today and it is certainly more than a "slight improvement" - the light output compared with the Sony is incredible. I just got through with my own test of the Sony HVL-LBP against the Comer LBPS 1800 and there is no contest. I used the Sony PMW-EX1 with settings of 4200 for white balance, F 1.9 and -3db Gain, 1/60 shutter in a small room with a bookcase in the corner and white shutters on a window to the side of that and tested the lights 6' and 9' from the corner (no other lights in room and window was shuttered - i.e. total darkness) - the difference between the two lights is literally night and day (pun intended). In addition to light output (I really didn't totally believe Comer's photometric charts before - that has changed), there is a large difference with the "spot" lens - i.e. much larger spot than the Sony and of course a lot brighter (I was getting a lot of zebras off the white shutters - my zebra is set at 90). When using the 3200 gel diffuser the light output goes down but is still excellent and if one uses the diffuser and the spot lens at the same time the "spot" becomes more of a flood and the light output is almost up there with the output from the non-diffused, non-"spotted" light. I also like the 4500K color of the Comer compared with the Sony 5500K. With mixed indoor lighting with Tungsten as well as light from windows - this should fill the bill quite nicely. I have done similar tests with the Litepanels Mini and the new Litepanels MicroPro and the Comer totally blows them out of the water.
By the way - I don't think this is a copy of the Sony - every little detail down to the smallest screw is the same as the Sony except for the on/off switch and LED readout of the battery charge level. I can only assume that Comer is the original manufacturer of the Sony light and have finally decided to "build a better mousetrap" on their own.
IMHO, even if this were the same price or even a bit more expensive than the Sony, I still think it would be a better deal."
Thank you for writing a review of this light and the comparison.
I am the person that the post above was written to, and I just received the Comer 1800 the other day.
Let me just say, that everything that was posted above to me is true. As an owner and long time user of the Sony HVL-LBP lights, let me just say that the light output form the Comer 1800 puts the Sony HVL light to shame.
It's no contest.
With no filters applied to both lights, the Comer 1800 is much much more intense in it's output and spread. Also, the 4500k colored LEDs (Sony HVL is 550K) are much more pleasing indoors as well.
When you flip down the 3200k diffuser, which the Sony HVL does not have, the light output is still more powerful than the output form the Sony HVL light with no filters applied.
Apply both of the filters on the Comer1800 (diffuser & spot focus) and you get nice strong 3200k floor light, with fairly decent spread. And with the spot focus and diffuser applied the light output is identical to the light with no filter applied. Very nice.
Overall , the build quality is identical to the Sony light except for a few things such as power switch and such. But it's very solid and I can't wait to give it a whirl at next weekends wedding shoot.
It seems like I will be selling off my Sony HVL lights for some more Comers.
Michael, thank you for leaving us your feedback and we're glad the light works great for you. I myself use the light too at weddings. It's the best light I ever have. No more grainy reception video :)
BTW, just so you know I just posted on the Comer 1800 light on my Tools of the Trade Blog.
Can I run this off my Anton Bauer Batteries utilizing their standard Power Tap cable on my ENG cameras?
thx
We don't have the Anton Bauer batteries here. Comer also manufactures batteries that uses the D-Tap cord. So it is very likely the included power cord can be used with your battery. But in the mean time, we cannot guarantee. To help a little, we updated this page with 2 more photos showing the B-Type connector. Take a look.
Do you sell the CM-LED1800, the one without battery? If yes, is it on the same price as the CM-LBPS1800? Could you tell me the shipping cost for Greece-Europe? Thanks.
We do not carry that in stock but we can special order one for you. There will be an additional $20 shipping cost added on top of it. Email us at info@lacolorshop.com if you want to proceed. It will take about 2 weeks+ for the item to be delivered.
You can also try using the NP-F770 battery which is smaller and lighter in weight.
Today i received my CM-LED 1800.
I'm a long time user of the PagLight in conjuction with the Powerarc lampholder. For you that don't know, Powerarc consumes 32w but the light output is equivalent to 100w.
My only consern was if the lght ouptput would be the same because at the specs, Pag states 1850lux and the CM-LED 1800lux. So i tested both lights side by side at 1m distance on a gray card at complete darkness. I used my JVC GY-HD201 at 30mm zoom and the iris was self adjusted on both ligths at F2.8 at 4300K. As far as light quality, Pag is superior. This is because it has a nice smooth reflector and the light is distributed evenly throughout the light circle. In contrary CM-LBPS1800 has a grid of horizontal and verical lines to soften the light. It's not that soft as Pag but it does the job.
I'm really happy i bought the CM-LBPS1800 because i can power it from the D-tap connector without draining all my power. And I'm free of the battery belts that Pag needed. Another thing is that leds will never go off. Powerarc lamp has 300hrs life and if costs $200!!!.
Taky thank you. I"ll probably buy another one for a friend. I"ll let you know by the end of the month.
Bill, I'm glad you like the Comer 1800 light. Hope we can serve you again in the future.
This light can be powered with any DC input between 6V-17V with the included D-Tab cable. Thanks.
I am an event/wedding videographer. I shoot with Canon XH A1 and 5D MK2. I have been using the litepanels micro. I recently bought the 1800 comer light. WOW! Output is incredible, the spread and fall off is way better. There is no contest. I was going to buy the new pro version of the litepanels, Im glad I found this light. The battery lasted me all night. I had some questions for seller and he responded promptly each time. Great light.
Judd, glad you like the Comer light. We are here to serve.
I order the COMER 1800 + 2 bats NP-F970 Friday 08/14(noon) i received the delivery today Monday 17 (noon) Excellent!!! Excellent service everything is in place . Preliminary tests look pretty good . Thanks Good buy !!!
Hi,
I am a new inductee to the digital video world and am looking to purchase an on-camera light to go with my DVX100B. Judging by the footage and reviews, the LBPS1800 is probably for me. I do need to know, however, if the battery comes with the light of if I need to purchase one separately (and is there an available discount on it if so). Also, would the battery need a separate charger or would it be able to charge internally through the light itself? This looks like a really great product and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
-T.O.
Hi Theodore, the light does not come with battery or charger. Scroll up to the top of the page and you see the link to the NP-F970 and NP-F750 battery and BC-V500 Charger. Thanks
Please confirm that the Comer 1800-LBPS will operate from either a Sony battery or an external DC source. Also, I can't find the unit's weight listed anywhere, with or without the battery. How much does it weigh?
Yes the light works with Sony L-series batteries, or 6-17V DC input using the included D-tap cable. Weight 420g which is about 1 pound.
Can you explain how the battery is attached to the the light?
There is a battery compartment at the back of the light. The battery is simply slapped at the back.
Hi.
I too, am in the UK, where this light does not seem to be locally available (heck, seems like virtually no-one, anywhere, does). Although I could not and would not hold you to it, do you have any idea of what it ends up costing after taxes and import duty? Have you had feedback from UK buyers on this?
Also, as someone who does not own fancy A-B batteries, the power cables are no use. I'd love to see this come with a 4-pin XLR instead. I'll make one myself (with an in-line switch so I can leave the brightness pot in the same place between takes), but would be great to have an option.
Finally, when are you expecting to get this back in stock?
Many thanks!
Thanks for your comment. The Comer 1800 light will be in stock on Nov 4th 2009. Most of them has been pre-ordered. Only a few left.
Hello, received the Comer 1800 light. WOW...this thing is fabulous. From the build quality to the light output...a total homerun! Thanks so much! And the case was a nice surprise! Fit right in the Porta Brace case with my Z5U. Plan on ordering two 900's real soon! Thanks for a great product!
Anthony D'Antuono Staten Island, New York
I received my Comer 1800 only two days after I ordered it. So thats Cali to Boston in 2 days. Thanks for the fast shipping. The light is brilliant! Makes the lightpanel Micro look like a travel version of light brights (kids toy). Wicked solid unit. Mounts up perfectly on my JVC GY HM100.
Donal McTucker Mad Morrigan Productions
Donal, that's great! I'm glad you like the Comer light.
Instead of camera mount, would like to use a tripod. Which one would you recommend, especially for travel? Looking at getting two 1800 kits for Sony camera. Thanks!
Hi Ken, Comer 1800 light is ready to be mounted on tripod or light stand without any adapter. However, it is recommended to use this adapter as the Comer shoe is plastic.
We do not have any tripod recommendation. It's best visit your local camera store to try them out yourself.
I've just used it last weekend for a wedding shoot on a Panasonic HVX-202, shooting on 720P HD.
The light is superb! The most powerful On-board video light i've used based on its weight and size. The light has a soft output when the 3200K filter is popped on, on par with litepanels MicroPro for softness but way brighter. It covers a very wide angle unlike other halogen video lights that shoots an unflattering spotlight at your subject with very harsh shadows.
Take Note: As stated in the picture above, the light accepts a reverse polarity input. All my other equipment (smallHD Monitor, iKan monitor) that accepts a 12V input is DIFFERENT from this light. do make sure you check before plugging in an external source.
The owner, Taky is friendly and helpful. He helped me solve my reverse polarity issue and replied my emails very fast. Thanks
If youre a wedding/event videographer, get this light. You wont regret it. It helped me get out of many 'sticky' lighting situations last weekend. If youre a DOP doing Narrative or info-eds, it comes in handy as a quick set-up fill light and location light.
Jason Teoh The Communication Boutique (Singapore)
Jason, thanks for the nice comment. Glad to know you are able to use the Comer light at wedding over the weekend.
I just wanted to day how much I am enjoying my 1800 LED light! I am a serious amateur and work in the professional photography software industry. I researched all of the other lights available because LED is clearly the way to go IMO. I was a little suspect of the 3200 filter when viewed to the naked eye, but after seeing my D300 adjust the white balance automatically the results were rather impressive. I've downgraded my main flash SB800 in favor of adding smaller wireless flash units for fill and back lighting.
It is very bright, but a person can keep their eyes open without a noticeable squint when the flash is on full power. This is a much better result than the typical flash cringe for sure. I'd like to see more professional headshots on the website, but I'm sure users will be posting them soon
When shooting my 3 month old baby I leave all but one of the "barn doors" closed, perfect! The car charger and ball unit I have no real use for. It seems a little heavier than my SB800, but with well over 100 minutes of constant light with no battery pack it is a no brainer. I'll try and post some samples after I adjust to direct lighting again.
Improvements:
I'd like a separate on off switch to use my prior brightness, and maybe in a better location so I can access it from the left or right. Granted with the battery life I can just leave it on.
It is a little bulky. Just remember to take the battery off before storing it in a bag.
The corner tabs to open or close the diffuser and spot focus covers should be a little larger.
I'd like a clip or switch to hold out the focusing filter for the "spot trick."
A custom gel holder "door" would be fantastic as well (I can DIY but it wouldn't be as slick)
Skyrunr, Albany NY
Thanks for your comment. I will forward your suggestions to Comer.
are the led bulbs replaceable on the Comer CM-LBPS1800? Is it a sealed housing?
Robert, the LED bulbs are not replaceable. They are made with professional quality that it virtually last forever. Thanks
Is this light compatbile with Sony NP-F570 ? It is a smaller battery than the 770 and 970. I bought a noname NP-F570 and it didn't fit.
NP-F570 will power the light. I actually have a photographer using Comer 1800 light with NP-F570. Because of the low profile fo the battery, he mounted the light on his Canon 5D without a battery touching his forehead =)
I am interested in the Comer CM-LBPS1800, but have a few questions. 1- I have a Sony NP-F750 battery. Is it compatable? 2- I now have a Canon Vixia FH S10 with a mini-shoe. Is there an adapter available so I can mount the Comer 1800 on my Canon? 3- Are there other color filters available for the Comer 1800?
Thx- Rich
Rich, let me answer your questions,
1. Comer 1800 lights take Sony L-Series battery. So you can use your NP-F750 battery with the Comer 1800 light.
3. There are only white diffuser and orange diffuser available.
Fast shipment, I ordered Thursday and I got the package on Saturday. I even got some extra goodies. Very good product so far.
Does the original comer 1800 come with the white diffuser as well? Or I have to buy it seperately? Thanks!
It does not come with the white diffuser. The light is by default diffused. So basically you do not need to use the white diffuser. Thanks
I have a small video studio (with a painted green screen wall background) in the basment of my home to shoot internet videos (sample: www.stateoftheplate.info) with a mini Kodak Zi8 high def comcorder. I usually standing 5 to 10 feet from the camcorder when shooting. I have been using 3 light stands for my shoots. Which product do you recommend I order to replace or enhance my current setup. I also have a K20D digital camera. Does your product mount onto the K20D?
Comer lights are flexible to be setup as flood or spot mode. You can use them to replace your current lighting setup easily. I am not familiar with the K20D digital camera. If it has a standard accessory shoe, it can host the Comer light.
I really can't say enough on the versatility of the light. It gave me enough punch but still looked natural to do an outdoor night scene on a rooftop deck in San Francisco. The lighting looked pretty natural for only having one light. It was really windy and really cold up there so we didn't want to pull power and set up a bunch of HMI's.
We also did a scene where the talent was walking down a dark street and had a PA hand holding the light up high walking backwards with them. I was able to dim it enough to get the scene to look believable.
The light worked out great.
I have owned the Sony HVL-LBP for two years and have found it to be a good quality and versatile light. I broke the plastic shoe fitting very quickly though and Sony replaced it with an improved strengthened version. This one has lasted and seems up to the task. I am keen to buy the CM1800 for both its extra power as well as the focussed spot ability, but need to know that spares for this shoe attachment are available in the unlikely event of any damage to the shoe occurring. I am based in Australia and thus the spares issue is important to me. Do you have the unit now in stock?
Hi, Comer 1800 is more enhanced than the Sony HVL-LBP in terms of color temperature, brightness, and usability. We have all the parts available here
We have the light in stock but in limited quantity.
I own a rental company and a client from the UK came in with this unit. VERY NICE! Before I buy several of these, is it possible to get replacement parts? (Renters tend to be destructive at times.) Thanks!
Hi Kevin, thank you for your interested. Yes all the parts can be ordered here
I received the CM1800 recently and was pleasantly surprised with the overall quality of this light! Very well built and very powerful light. A great value! Works great with my HPX 300. I do have one question, however. The pamphlet that came with the light says not to use the light with an intelligent accessory shoe. My other camera is an XL2 which has an intelligent acc. shoe. Has anyone used this light on the XL2? Will mounting this light on the XL2 do any damage?
Terry, I'm glad you like the light. As you can tell the shoe of the light is plastic. There would be no damage to your XL2 Advance accessory shoes. Actually I have used my light on GL2, XH-A1 and HV30. They are all fine. Thanks
Info for future buyers. I will not write a review cause others already done that, so I will just say that this is high quality product and shipment is very fast. For cordless light it's very powerful in low light ambient. I also bought two batteries NP 970 and received in Europe for about one week. Very nice and pleasant seller.
Hi, how long is the provided D-Tap Cable? Thanks.
Comer now only includes one D-tap cable which is 0.55m. I can replace it with the longer one which is 1.2m in length.
I'd like to take a moment to say a few words about LA Color Shop and the Comer 1800.
Last summer, I purchased the Comer 1800 to use with my Sony HVR-270. I found it to be an improvement over my Anton Bauer UL-2.
While I didn't find battery life to be what others claimed, there were other features I liked. The spread was smoother, not as spotty, while the 3200k and 4500K filters allowed me to get pleasing colors at different temperatures.
When the light malfunctioned in December, Taky replaced my light at no charge for the new Comer. I discovered that the new light met or exceeded the battery life others claimed. Taky was very accessible by phone, text, and Email.
I recommend checking out the Comer 1800 and LA Color Shop.
I have used the comer 1800 for a wedding event this past weekend and couldn't be happier! Great Light! I bought 2 F770s as well and they lasted all night long! I used the spot light to light the parents at the church and it was impressive!! I definitely recommend this for any videographer! Oh and Taky's customer service is definitely A++++++!!!!!
Leo, thanks for your nice comment. I was a wedding yesterday. The videographer had a very weak camera light. It ended up, most of the time guests did not know where the event take place as they heard only the announcement from the MC. Comer spot light feature gives a focal point in the ballroom and making it a stage-like.
Hi, would this Comer 1800 be too big for my Canon HF S100? Thanks
It might be too big for a compact camcorder. However, you can try mounting the camera and light to a bracket like this one
Hi, does the Comer 1800 only come with Sony batteries?..I was looking at getting the Comer 900 with Canon batteries now and if I later upgrade to the 1800 than I would have to go with Sony batteries so can't use my Canon ones?
Thanks
That is correct. There is only 1 model of Comer 1800 that uses Sony compatible L-series battery.
I am really interested in buying one of this lamps, but I am not sure which would be the best to get a 1800 or maybe get a 900 and later on get another one. I own a Vixia HF S10 and I use it mainly for small clips on events. My main activity is till photography, so I might also use it as a continuous light. I am afraid the 1800 will look too big on my camera and more than I need
Hi Maria, for you HF-S100, you will need to get an adapter in order to mount standard accessory to the camera. So you can consider mounting the camera to this bracket
It will increase your rig stability too. Now you can mount the Comer 1800 light to the bracket without feeling too big. Otherwise, the Comer 900 light will fit what you need to do.
Hi, am enjoying the Comer 1800 I purchased from you. Could you please suggest how I can get rid of shadows created when focussing the light on subjects in a darkly lit room?
Thanks
Hi San,
You can check out (google) 3-point lighting. That's the technique used in setting up lighting in a professional manner.
I want to film with my Canon 5D Mark II, is it possible to mount this light?
Yes you can mount the Comer light on top of your 5D Mark II. If you plan to take still photos with the view finder, you will need to use the NP-F770 or NP-F570 batteries so the battery won't be touching your forehead.
Taky, what cable woudl you recommend for connecting an XLR battery to the DC input on the Comer?
Michael, I do not have any information on the XLR battery cable.
Greetings, Would you please tell me more about the condenser lens tricks thingy that I viewed in the video you have posted on your site. Is it an accessory and if so, how much and most importantly, how is the condenser lens tricks achieved? Thanks.
The condenser is the bottom piece attached to the light included. No additional cost.
The New Comer CM-LBPS1800b Second Generation Model is the same unit that you sell in the deluxe kit?..includes the bag too?..Sorry for the questions..
Cesar, yes we are selling all second generation Comer models. Please check under "Package Content" of what is included in the package.
Excellent light! Well built and very functional. Do not hesitate to buy to all considering. Thanks Taky and thank you Comer!
Yes, agree with all the positive comments about this light, but the Sony NP-F570 battery has a slightly different footprint and does NOT work with the Comer 1800 in the battery compartment. See your comment 2/4/2010 "NP-F570 will power the light..." It probably will but not in the battery compartment.
The product works with our NP-F570 battery. Please take a look at this page for typical run time too.
